Program Description:

Saint Louis University is an American, Jesuit university ranked among the top 100 research and teaching institutions in the United States. Distributed over two campuses: St. Louis campus in the United States and Madrid campus in Spain, the University enrolls more than 11,000 students, over 650 of whom pursue their studies in Madrid. While originally established in the 1960s as a study abroad program for US college students, the Madrid Campus is now a free-standing campus of Saint Louis University where students from more than 65 countries study undergraduate and graduate courses to obtain either U.S. 4-year undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees or, in the case of study abroad students, credits towards their degrees on their home campuses.

Students will receive a quality education, as well as the added value of international exposure, providing them a competitive edge over their peers upon graduation. Service-learning opportunities, athletic facilities and student organizations offer students the opportunities to get involved while attending SLU-Madrid.

Each semester begins with Welcome Sessions, which bring together all new students. You will learn about Spain, the city of Madrid and the SLU-Madrid campus. Additionally, SLU-Madrid organizes cultural day trips at the beginning of each session exploring the history and culture of Spain, including cities such as Segovia, Toledo and Salamanca.

Visit SLU-Madrid's website for a complete list of programs. A complete course listing is also available online. In addition to classroom-based courses, SLU-Madrid also offers service-learning opportunities in Madrid. These opportunities vary widely.

The academic calendar and final exam schedule is available on the SLU-Madrid calendar webpage.

All non-SLU visiting students are able to skip the prerequisites for courses. If you experience any problems please contact the registrar.

Students have the opportunity to live with a host family and be immersed in the Spanish language and culture on a daily basis. This is often one of the most rewarding experiences students have.

Alternatively, the university also provides assistance with housing options in residences for university students. The residences do not belong to SLU-Madrid, nor to any university in particular. However, most of the residents are native Spaniards studying at a wide range of universities in Madrid.

Please view the "Budget Sheet" link above the brochure for information on costs

Madrid, the capital of Spain, is a city with a relatively short history in comparison to other European capitals. Selected to become the principal city in the second part of the 16th century, Madrid has become a modern, diverse and important city with more than five million inhabitants. The culture of the city is thriving, with the center of the city crowded until very late at night.

Madrid has experienced much growth. There are various modern districts and new buildings and offices, but locals can still find much of the old Madrid and its buildings integrated in the city. Famous landmarks and museums have made the city extremely attractive to tourists, and the financial activity makes Madrid very important to the country’s economics. Among the most famous attractions in Madrid is the Museo del Prado that contains numerous famous paintings from artists like El Greco, Velázquez, and Goya. The collection is so large that only half of the collection is displayed at a time. Other famous places to visit are Parque del Buen Retiro, the Plaza Mayor, la Puerta del Sol, and the Palacio Real.
