Program Description:

This is an Applied Global Business Learning (AGBL) trip that is supported by the Center for Global and Economic Studies. AGBL is a unique volunteer organization that looks to assist communities in developing nations. By providing micro-enterprise solutions, it is the hope of the organization to foster sustainable business practices while preserving cultural ideals. In the past, the participating students visited rural cities and consulted and provided business expertise to different businesses including a drinkable water system and farming family. A paper and some additional meetings in addition to the trip are required.

The cities of Chinique and La Puerta in Quiche are all small rural villages in the countryside of Guatemala. Working in these cities gives students a chance to learn more about the culture of the villages and get to know and help the natives. The people of this area are mostly indigenous, and the area is home to some of the worst atrocities of the Civil War. Today, the state of Quiche is the second poorest in Guatemala and in need of our help. Antigua is in the central highlands of Guatemala and is famous for its Spanish Baroque influenced architecture, as well as ruins of colonial churches. It is a smaller city with a population of about 40,000. However, with its famous architecture and landmarks, Antigua is very popular among tourists and tourism is the main driver of their economy. It also has beautiful scenery, with three large volcanoes dominating the horizon around the city.
