Understanding the Program Budget

Line items on the budget sheet are sorted into two sections:
  • Billable: Are expenses are charges applied to your Marquette University (MU) student account.
  • Non-billable: In addition to the program costs paid to MU, you will have expenses associated with study abroad program. These are estimated out of pocket expenses you pay yourself. The amounts are estimated costs based on current exchange rates and on the information provided to us by the host institution. Depending on your personal spending habits, you may spend more or less than the figures provided.
All costs are subject to change without notice.

Deposit

Not all programs will require a deposit.  If a deposit is required, it is non-refundable and must be paid by the established deadline. See your program application for more details.  Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro study abroad program as of Spring 2018 does not require a deposit for this program by Marquette University. Your host institution or provider may require a deposit or confirmation (commitment) fees, this will vary by program.

Withdrawal Penalties

Withdrawal from a program after acceptance will not guarantee a full refund of tuition or program fees. Refunds for fees paid or owed to Marquette University will be based on expenses the Office of International Education is able to recover on the student’s behalf. The student will be responsible for unrecoverable expenses and pre-paid expenses made on their behalf.  Refunds for costs paid to external entities are subject to the external entity's withdrawal policies.

Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro's website stipulates the following withdrawal policies as of Spring 2018:

From the program:

Students need to notify PUC-Rio in writing thirty days before the program starts.
Refunds will be issued only if  withdrawn request is informed  up to one month prior to the course start date. In case of reimbursement: operational costs related to acceptance, cancelation process and to bank transaction fees will be deducted from the total amount refunded

From the Accomodation Program:

In order to avoid pay a fine for withdrawing from the Accommodation Program, students need to notify PUC-Rio in writing thirty days before the program starts.
If the students decide to withdraw from the Accommodation Program with less than thirty days before the course starts, they will have to pay the first month rent when they arrive in Rio de Janeiro. This is not negotiable.

After the Accommodation Program starts, students who decide to leave the Accommodation Program before the end of the month won’t receive money back. Several universities have agreements where students cannot leave PUC housing for the first month of the program. Check with your university if you are required to stay in PUC Accommodation.

If the students choose to leave the accommodation, they must inform the International Programs Central Coordination Office via written notification at least 15 days before the end of the month contract.  If they do not respect the 15-day deadline, they must pay a fine. Please check the Accommodation contract for details.
